Put Your Own Oxygen Mask on First...
You know when you're on a plane, and they give you the safety briefing before takeoff?
They tell you that you’ll need to put your own oxygen mask on first, before helping others.
The reason they do this is because if your oxygen supply is flowing, then you can be of help to others…
But, if you can’t breathe yourself, then obviously you can’t be of service to anybody.
Makes sense, right?
Well, this very concept is just as important in your normal everyday life.
Think about it, if you're struggling to get through the day…
You have a massive to-do list…
You’re feeling tired…
You’re burnt out…
And you feel like you want to reach for the ice cream and cry into a pillow…
Then the same thing applies…you need to put your “oxygen mask” on.
When you’re struggling to get through the day like that, you can’t be of any real service to anybody.
You won't be able to perform well at work, you will be less present with your partner, you’ll have less patience with your kids, and none of that makes you feel good, right?
The key is, making sure (for at least a small part of the day) you put yourself first.
Now, on the surface, that might sound a little selfish, especially if you have kids, like me…
But if you’re always leaving yourself until last (like that plane passenger with no oxygen supply), it won't be long until you crash and burn.
And nobody wants that, right?
Well, “putting on your oxygen mask” first…
And learning to take proper care of yourself first…
…is one of my core GlowState principles.
